The Library of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) at New York University (NYU), in collaboration with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities and Digital Scholarship. Applications are due January 4, 2019. For more information about the fellowship and eligibility, please see the CLIR announcement and application materials.

ISAW and the NYU Division of Libraries are looking for a creative and technically skilled scholar to collaborate with a vibrant and diverse group of academic professionals to develop, implement, and extend new and innovative methods and forms of digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and pedagogy in ancient studies and to support a shared vision for incorporating digital technologies in innovative, collaborative research, teaching, and learning at NYU. We welcome candidates who will have earned a Ph.D. between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2019 in any discipline relevant to ancient studies and are familiar with digital methods, have experience with collaborative digital scholarship, and an interest in issues at the intersection of digital scholarship, libraries, and pedagogy.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will explore and make substantive contributions to some of the following project areas:

  • digital libraries (e.g., the Ancient World Digital Library (AWDL), the Digital Central Asia Archaeology Collection (DCAA), and Ancient World Image Bank);

  • linked-data bibliography

  • digital publications (e.g., ISAW books and ISAW Papers)

  • mapping projects (e.g., Pleiades, library collection mapping)

  • archaeological databases

  • digital preservation and repository projects for ancient studies scholarship

  • international, interdisciplinary digital projects in ancient studies and the humanities (e.g., nomisma.org, papyri.info, etc).

The Fellow will also participate in curriculum design and instruction through some of the following activities:

  • leading workshops on digital tools (e.g., Zotero, GIS, Python, etc.)

  • working with faculty and students to develop mastery of tools and methods and to advance research projects (e.g., in the context of GA-3024 “Introduction to Digital Approaches to the Ancient World”); and

  • supporting public programming at the intersection of ancient studies and the digital humanities (e.g., Ancient MakerSpaces, Digital Approaches to Teaching the Ancient Mediterranean, etc.).

As a full member of the ISAW Library team, the Fellow will gain real-world experience with library operations, bibliographic and grant research, and public services.

The Fellow will be expected to spend 20 percent of his or her time on research, writing, scholarly presentations and related  activities, with generous support from regular professional development resources. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also be invited to participate in the activities sponsored by the CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship program and the professional engagement and scholarly community building activities sponsored by the NYU Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, as well as similar activities sponsored by NYU’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
